Fr Paul Gatt OP, aged 49 from Valletta, is the new Dominican Provincial, the head of the Maltese Dominican Province. He was elected during the first session of the 45th Dominican Provincial Chapter at the Dominican Priory at Valletta. The Provincial Chapter not only chooses the head of the Dominican Fathers for the next four years but also analyses and makes policies for the Dominicans living in Malta and Albania.
Fr Paul began his philosophical and theological studies at the St Thomas Aquinas Institute in Rabat and the Dominican Studium in Bologna, Italy. He was ordained priest by Pope John Paul II on 24 June 1979 and continued his studies at the Angelicum where he received his licence in Theology.
He also acted as secretary to the General Postulation of the Dominican Order and assisted in the cause for the Beatification of Beatu Gorg Preca.
In Malta, Fr Paul gave service as promoter of vocations, formator for novices and students, spiritual director and rector of St Albert the Great College as well as parish priest in Gwardamangia and St Dominic’s in Valletta.
As Provincial, he succeeds Fr Charles Fenech who acted as Provincial for the last eight years.
