Having been played almost every Sunday since March, the H2Only Mixed League is now gradually drawing to its close while emitting its first final verdict concerning the championship title.

Birkirkara 1565 are this season’s first division champions. They rightly claimed their crown at the end of a competition which they led from start to finish and throughout which they were never defeated, having only dropped two points in a drawn match against runners-up Pawla Wolves Schtag.

Captained by Stefan Salomone, the squad featured also his brother Robert as well as Fiorella Farrugia. This threesome integrated well throughout the season, combining their individual talents in an effective manner that led them to winning this national title.

Second-placed Pawla Wolves Schtag could not stand the pace of their adversaries. Despite drawing their first round direct encounter and sharing the top of the provisional table for the greater part of the season, the Wolves inexplicably fell behind in the final crucial stage of the title race.

An unexpected defeat against Birkirkara Lowenbrau further complicated matters for them.

Captained by Kenneth Vella, the Wolves’ team featured also Anthony Xuereb and Catherine Dimech.

The final first division table reads as follows: Birkirkara 1565 22 points; Pawla Wolves Schtag 15; Birkirkara Lowenbrau 13; Birkirkara John Bull 7.

The Second Division continues with its remaining four fixtures and will come to its end on 19th June.

Pawla Wolves Schtag have taken over at the top of the provisional table with a healthy four-point lead over second-placed Birkirkara Red Lion, though the latter have a game in hand.

In their latest outing, the Wolves secured a 4-0 win over Birkirkara Jazz. Frans Vella as well as brothers Edmond and Rodney Abela were the players behind this positive result for the Paolites, which enabled them to maintain their place at the helm of the competition.

On their part, Birkirkara Red Lion obtained a similar 4-0 result against Birkirkara Power Fruit. Martin Farrugia, Daniel Abdilla and Rachel Attard were the players who sourced this important victory for the Lions, enabling them to remain within striking distance of the Wolves.

The Lions will now recover their missing game next Sunday against Birkirkara Jazz, following which they will then head for the title showdown against the Wolves on the last day of this competition.
