The Emirates Malta team was declared the Emirates football tournament winner from among ten teams fielded by Emirates UK, Emirates Malta, Emirates Germany and Emirates Dubai. Through the sponsorship Emirates have with Chelsea FC, Stamford Bridge Stadium, the home ground of English Champions Chelsea FC is made available to Emirates UK to organise a yearly 11-a-side football tournament between EK offices.
This was the first time since the first edition of the tournament in 2002 that teams from various European and Dubai stations were invited to participate. Before, only UK offices and departments used to participate. Unfortunately, the Italians had to drop out at the very last minute due to a transportation strike in Italy on the day of the tournament.
Each team played two matches of 20 minutes each with the team with most points from each group reaching the final. The Malta team was made up of Emirates staff, travel agents, cargo agents and staff from Emirates ground handling agent Air Malta.
Emirates Malta played against the Emirates Manchester Call Centre and the Emirates Gatwick team winning both games 2-0 and 1-0 respectively. In the final, Emirates Malta played against the Emirates UK SkyCargo team who have been the champions for the past two years and won by a very narrow score line of 1-0.
