Waterpolo – Preview: Sliema – Neptunes Clash should be weekend’s main attraction

Malta Independent Friday, 8 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The top four teams will clash against each other in direct encounters over this weekend, hopefully bringing some excitement and glamour, which has been missing so far, in the local Waterpolo League at last.

The first clash this evening between champions Sliema and eternal rivals Neptunes, should top the bill. Both teams have so far had easy matches, with not a decent challenge in sight, against inferior opponents in the lower part of the table.

No wonder they have both chalked out maximum points from their first four matches, piling up more than a century of goals between them. Neptunes can rely on their sound defence. Albeit against inferior opponents, they have only let in nine goals in four matches.

Although this is only the first of many more direct encounters to come by this season, it would be interesting to assess the respective’s teams potential when both going through a stern test.

Tomorrow, the other two top teams in the standings, Marsascala and Sirens will meet each other in another intriguing match which should provide more excitement.

Marsascala should offer stiff opposition if regulars like Gialanze, Licari, Galea and goalkeeper Bugeja return to the side after missing the previous match against Marasaxlokk.

The second match on this evening’s programme is between bottom sides Valletta and Exiles, both looking for their first win this season while tomorrow, Marsaxlokk and San Giljan, who are also still pointless and winless from four outings, hope to register some progress and taste some success when they play each other tomorrow.

Programme:

Today: 7pm- Valletta-Exiles; 8pm- Sliema-Neptunes

Tomorrow: 6pm- Marsaxlokk-San Giljan; 7pm- Marsascala-Sirens
