AD’s Duty to residents in the South

Malta Independent Sunday, 17 July 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

AD chairperson Dr Harry Vassallo accompanied by a number of party spokespersons and Green Party officials, today visited commercial outlets and met residents during a walkabout at Marsascala discussing the challenges faced by the locality.

Addressing a press conference he said that the Green Party has a clear duty to every part of the country and would not shirk its duty to localities such as Marsascala which require particular attention in view of the special burdens with which they are threatened.

Dr Vassallo said that all the people he met expressed concern about the siting of the waste recycling plant at Sant’Antnin. “The Green Party while being in favour of recycling cannot fail to note the blatant shortcomings of the site selection process adopted in this case and reaffirms its commitment to support Marsascala residents in their reasonable demand to be fully and fairly consulted in decision making which will affect the quality of life in the locality for years to come.”

Dr Vassallo also met members of the Movement for the Conservation of the Maghluq Valley who presented him with a copy of their submission to MEPA with regard to the South Malta Local Plan. He said that the commitment of local residents to their locality in an organized manner was an invaluable contribution since only they could point out threats and opportunities in the planning process in sufficient detail.

“The Movement’s concerns will be given due weight in the Green Party’s submissions to MEPA with regard to the South Malta Local Plan which will be made before the final date for submissions on July 31st.” Dr Vassallo said.

“The various interests of fishermen, tourism sector operators and residents must be safeguarded in order to support the efforts made so far to develop the locality while conserving its unique character” Dr Vassallo said. He ended by saying that no development should be allowed to threaten the quality of life in Marsascala and that the Green Party would engage every means at its disposal in the service of local residents.
