Hibernians had a positive start in their own Carlsberg tournament as they brushed aside a challenge from Pieta Hotspurs to win with an impressive 5-2 scoreline.

A one-minute silence was observed as a sign of respect in memory of former Malta international goalkeeper David Cleutt who passed away on Sunday in a hospital in England.

Hibernians opened the scoring after only two minutes through summer signing Haruna Doda. Terence Scerri scored the second on 16 minutes.

Ten minutes after the break Pieta hit the post through Carmelo Angelo Sciuto but they pulled one back through Martin Deanov on 59 minutes.

Doda then scored his second goal for Hibs while Sciuto made the score 3-2 only for Julian Vella to grab a fourth goal for the hosts. Scerri scored the fifth and final goal in added time.

In the second match yesterday evening, Valeltta defeated Marsaxlokk 3-2 (HT 2-0).

Massimo Grima opened the scoring from a penalty and City’s new striker Ani Geremiah scored a second on 29 minutes.

Ian Zammit got a third on 53 minutes, but Marsaxlokk saved some blushes with two late goals through Templeman and newcomer Sciberras, though it was not enough.

Tomorrow: 6pm Marsaxlokk-Hibernians; 8pm Valletta-Pieta.
