Maltese shooter William Chetcuti obtained the best ever result so far in his impressivev career in Double Trap when he finished second in the World Cup for seniors in Belgrade yesterday, thus claiming the silver medal.

Last week, he had won the silver medal in the juniors event, also in Belgrade.

It was undoubtedly the best result ever for any Maltese shooter, especially at such a top level.

William registered three rounds of 47, 46 and 48 for a score of 141 from 150. A shoot-off became necessary as there were five on 141. William qualified for the final during which he recorded a score of 47 from 50, for a grand total of 188. Another shoot-off was necessary for the silver and bronze medal and Chetcuti emerged on top to claim the prestigious silver medal.

The competition was won by Mohammed Al Maktoum of the United Arab Emirates, who seems to be in a class of his own – he had also won the Olympics gold medal in Athens last year.

In the trap event, Stanley Cardona had a score of 115/125, Nicky Carabott 111/125 and Antoine Bugeja 107/125. In the skeet event, Jason Sciberras registered a score of 111/125.

The Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, and the Minister of Education, responsible for Sport, Dr Louis Galea, were among the first to congratulate Chetcuti on his great feat.

The Maltese contingent, including Chetcuti, is expected to arrive in Malta today at 6pm.
