FISEC Games: Gold And Bronze for Malta in swimming events

The second day of the Games in Madrid brought about some fantastic results for the Maltese athletes.

Malta also obtained the first medals in swimming yesterday.

The first came courtesy of young swimmer Kyle Scerri who won the bronze medal in the 200 metres freestyle with a national record of 2.01.77 in the morning.

Later in the day Scerri did better, winning the 100m butterfly final with a record time for the Games of 58.41 seconds.

Francesca Paolella won bronze in the 50m freestyle clocking a superb 28.48 seconds. Melinda Sue Micallef swam the same distance in 29.49 seconds.

In Tennis, all Maltese players advanced to the next round.

Steffi Sullivan beat La Gro of Holland 9-0 while Kim Cassar beat Spaniard Rijack 9-5.

In the men’s singles Clayton Zammit triumphed over Hartman 9-1 and Alan Calleja beat both Italian opponent Assereto 9-2 and then defeated Dutch Rutgers 9-0. Matthew Asciak also registered two wins against Haenen 9-0 and Izquierdo 9-4.

In the men’s doubles Zammit and Calleja beat Dutch opposition 9-4 to advance in the competition.

The ladies Basketball team also registered their first win after a defeat against the French. Yesterday, Carlo Farrugia’s girls beat Spain A (49-33). Today Malta plays against Italy.

There was a 2-2 draw for Malta against Spain A in the FUTSAL competition, with Lee Galea and Luke Fenech being the Maltese scorers.

Futsal: 11.30am Italy- Malta

Handball: 10am Malta - Brazil

Athletics: from 4pm Heats and finals.

Tennis: 9.30-12.30 Semi- Finals Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
