Rescue Team remove dolphin carcass

Malta Independent Friday, 5 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Marine Rescue Unit of Nature Trust Malta recently took part in the removal of a dolphin carcass that was found in Birzebbuga.

The matter was reported to Nature Trust on 28 July by the local police.

The carcass of a Risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus) in a very advanced state of decomposition was found floating on the water’s edge at Birzebugga near the Bocci club.

The carcass must have been that of an adult dolphin, because it already had four teeth on each side of its lower jaw.

Most of the carcass, including the mouth, was infested by barnacles. Sampling of the specimen was undertaken as part of an international research project.

The Marine Rescue Unit of Nature Trust Malta is a 24-hour service of volunteers, including biologists and veterinarians, who undertake the rescue of injured dolphins and turtles.

This expensive service saves the lives of at least three dolphins and a dozen turtles every year and Nature Trust is seeking funds in order to establish a marine wildlife clinic.
