I Have learned to appreciate people and things

Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

Over my 20 years as a competitive athlete, I learned to appreciate many people, and many things. As a young sprinter, the support my parents and sister gave me helped me persevere with the dedication to my sport. My various coaches over the years gave so much of their time to be with me on the track, in the weights room, at competitions. The only way I could show my appreciation to these valuable people, was by doing my best in training and competition, and striving to break records.

I have learned to appreciate time, and now that my husband Nathan and I are parents to 15 month old Robyn, I know how every moment together in her and our life is precious.

When I was 17, a fellow track friend, also 17, was killed whilst training.

Things like these have had a major impact on my life, how I see the world, and how I appreciate those around me.

We must all appreciate life, and really make the most of it. It is important to be grateful for what one has. It is so easy to grumble and find fault with things around you, but if you just look around and learn to really appreciate all the positive things in your life, you will surely be a happier person.

I certainly am!
