Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 22 years ago

“An item that invariably makes the news headlines in the media both locally and internationally is the bestowal of various types of honours by society upon people from all walks of life. Probably the most famous are the honours conferred in the film and music industries and in the world of sport. Other honours are conferred in recognition of services rendered in the fields of the arts, community services humanitarian contributions etc. In fact the list is interminable.

These honours or awards are nothing but a manifestation of the appreciation of the authorities, governing bodies and the public in general for the achievements of men and women of all ages and from all backgrounds in their particular profession, work, study or sport.

In financial terms appreciation represents increase in value. This is valid also in our particular theme. Appreciation in sport enhances the value of the athlete’s performance and acts as a stimulant for renewed efforts and improvement.”
