Neptunes Try to regain lost ground in difficult encounter with champions

Malta Independent Friday, 19 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Neptunes and Sliema play each other tomorrow in what should be the to. waterpolo match of the weekend in Division 1.

Neptunes, lying fourth, two points adrift of leaders and champions Sliema, will try to make up for their recent disappointing results.

Neptunes have lost 10-7 to Sirens a fortnight ago and then could only draw with Marsascala (6-6) last Friday.

Tomorrow they will be expected to face another stern test against the champions and sporting rivals Sliema. The latter are not going through a very bright patch either as they similarly were beaten by Marsascala two weeks ago and then had to settle for a 5-5 draw against Sirens, when they were foiled by Jonathan Valletta’s late strikes.

The drop of form by Sliema and Neptunes enabled both Sirens and Marsascala to keep up the challenge and close the gap on the leaders. Both tied on 13 points, in second place in the league standings, the two teams play each other this evening.

A win for any of them will put them temporarily at the top, as they await tomorrow’s clash between Neptunes and Sliema as the Division 1 championship is taking an interesting twist.

In Division 2, joint leaders San Giljan and Exiles should continue their march ahead when they face Marsaxlokk and Ta’ Xbiex respectively.

The other match this weekend, scheduled for tomorrow, is between Otters and Valletta. The latter, lying a distant third in the standings, start as favourites to collect full points when going through a fine run of form at present, as their 7-5 win over Ta’ Xbiex last weekend, suggests.
