Cycling – BMX Fest: A Great success

The months of preparation and hard work paid off for the BMX Association, as this year’s event ‘The BMX Fest’ was a great success. The three-day event kicked off with a fun ride from Ta’ Xbiex, were the mayor of the town gave the start to the ride.

The pack of riders escorted by traffic police then proceeded to ride towards the BMX track in Pembroke making stops in Sliema, St. Julian’s, Swieqi and Pembroke. At the various localities, the riders were greeted by the mayors of each town who encouraged the riders to continue participating in such events.

Upon arrival at the track, the first of four events kicked off, that being the “Pedal Power” Street competition. Although the riding capabilities of both groups were high the top three of both events were:

Group A: 1st David Camilleri, 2nd Chris Marsh, 3rd Julian Delia.

Group B: 1st Ryan Mallia, 2nd Oswald Bezzina, 3rd Rikki Galea.

The second day began with the “Damage Inc” Skills competition. This event was a new edition to the weekend as it incorporated the riders basic bike control skills, those being the bunny hop, big air and best trick.

Results were as follows:

Group A: 15l David Camilleri, 2nd Julian Delia & Micky Farrugia (tie), 3rd Mark Filletti.

Group B: 1st Estivan Spitert, 2nd Rikki Galea, 3rd Ryan Mallia.

Soon after the skills competition followed the “Centre Point” track-racing event.

7-10: 1st Jake Micallef, 2nd Matthew Cassar.

10-13: 1st Leon Zammit, 2nd Dylan Darmanin, 3rd Beppe Barone.

13-16: 1st Nathan John Mercieca, 2nd Jean C.Cauchi, 3rd David Borg.

Following the track racing riders were given a break and treated to a demonstration by the MORC (Model off road club] who showed off their model monster truck skills around the tracks jumps.

The fourth and final event for the weekend was the “Eastpak” dirt competition, which was held on the newly built dirt jumps built especially for the competition.

Results

Group A: 1st David Camilleri, 2nd Kenneth Bugeja, 3rd Leon Zammit.

Group B; 1st Darrly Schiberras, 2nd Mattia Busutill, 3rd Ryan Mallia.

With all the events behind them, the riders could take it easy and look forward lo enjoying the BBQ and presentation night which was to be held on Sunday.

During the presentation representatives for “Damage inc”, “Pedal Power”, “Eastpak” and “Centre Point” presented the prizes to all the winners. The BMX Association thanked all the sponsors for donating prizes for each of their events, as well as Redbull, Tetley and the Ta’ Xbiex, Swieqi, Sliema, St Julian’s and Pembroke local councils for helping out in other areas.
