Call To publish monitoring reports

Malta Independent Tuesday, 30 August 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Rural Affairs Ministry should publish the monitoring reports drawn up after Malta’s EU accession to establish the distortion in the price of imported food stuffs that is affecting local farmers and producers, said Malta Labour Party MP Noel Farrugia.

In a statement issued yesterday, Mr Farrugia explained that the publishing of these reports would be in the interest of the country. “It will help local farmers and those in the processing and agro-industry to draw up investment plans to rise above the challenges of unfair competition,” he said.

By withholding the reports, and not keeping the promise made prior to EU accession to safeguard the sector, the Nationalist Government is bound to lead the local agriculture sector to its ruin, Mr Farrugia.
