Tennis: Superb Elaine Genovese Wins Under 14 title at international tournament

A superb Elaine Genovese overcame the stiff resistance offered by the Austrian player Christine Mathis to win the Gold in the final of the Girls’ Singles of the U.14 international tournament held at Tennis Club Kordin.

Both girls performed to their highest ability and skill with Elaine having a slighter edge over her opponent. Spurred on by the sizeable crowd which gathered at Kordin in support of the local girl, Elaine managed to win the encounter in three sets with the score reading 4-6; 6-1; 6-3. With this victory the local girl added another 60 points to her European ranking.

In the final of the Boys’ singles, Eros Siringo of Italy beat his compatriot and partner in the Doubles’ event, Ettore Zito, 6-4; 6-4. This was also another hard fought encounter in which, both boys displayed excellent tennis skills and tactics to the appreciation of every one present. Both players showed aggressiveness in their play which brought out their physical preparation for the tournament. It was a pity that one of them had to lose.

Boys’ Doubles: Eros Siringo/Ettore beat Alan Calleja/Filippo Mangano 6-3; 6-2.

Girls’ Doubles: Jessica Courtnel/Amy Bowtel beat Kimberely Cassar/Larissa Schut 4-6; 6-3; 6-1

Consolation Events: Boys: Alessio Piccioli beat Alan Cassar 4-1; 4-1. Girls: Larissa Schut beat Amy Bowtel.
