Winners and runners-up of various tournaments organised by VLTC were presented with trophies recently. The competitions involved were San Michel teams tournament, Kia Motors Singles, Wilson teams tournament, Playcraft Doubles and San Michel Junior Open.
San Michel teams tournament
A large number of veterans and beginners, participated in this tournament which was played among six teams in a round robin format. During a hard-fought final played on The Model Shop court, the team of Anthony Sammut got the better of Rinaldo Alessandro's team, when both finished with same number of sets, but Sammut had an edge on points. Simonds Farsons Cisk plc sponsored the event.
Kia Motors singles tournament
This competition was sponsored by Kia Motors of Qormi which forms part of the Tumas Fenech Group. The tournament consisted of seven men divisions and two women sections, each comprising eight players. Each match was won on the best of three sets. In the premier division, Brian Tonna carried the honours in the men's section while Alexia Carabott came tops in the women's group.
Wilson teams tournament
The Wilson teams tournament was played on a 14-game, round robin basis. In the semi-finals the team of Suiniel Balani beat Lino Sciculan's team while the team captained by Carmen Elden eliminated that of Pauline Muscat. The final was played on the Orienta court in front of a sizeable crowd which assisted to some fine play. Despite stiff opposition from Elden's team, Balani's team emerged on top, thus becoming the first to win the Wilson Tournament at VLTC.. The event was sponsored by the Wilson sports firm through its representative in Malta, Gordon Asciak.
Playcraft doubles tournament
In its fifteen-year long history, this tournament has always been greeted with enthusiasm at VLTC. In the men's doubles final Andrew Spiteri and Victor Rutter beat Raymond Mintoff and Conrad Aquilina, whilst in the women's section Marthese Camoin and Jacqueline Vanhear got the better of Judith Ricci and Lucia Sammut in the women's section. Playcraft Trophies & Engravers of Paola were the sponsors.
San Michel junior Open
This ranking event was held under the auspices of the Malta Tennis Federation. The tournament was open to players up to 18 years of age and the winners were: Alan Calleja (Boys U/16 and U/14) Sudzuka Omar (Boys U/12), Malcolm Gatt Baldacchino (Boys U/10), Angela Bartolo ( Girls U/16) and Brenda Galea (Girls U12).
Most of the finals were held on the Samsung/Sound Machine court.
