Tennis: Coaching Clinics at Kordin Tennis Club this year

Malta Independent Wednesday, 7 September 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

One of the main aims of Tennis Club Kordin is the promotion of the Tennis Game. For this purpose, this year’s coaching clinic will be starting on 2 October and, will come to an end on 28 May 2006).

Throughout this period, three sessions of coaching will be held between 9.30am and 12.30pm. These include sessions for adults wishing to improve their game and, for those who would like to take up the game for the first time

The Tennis Club Kordin’s coaching team is made up of the following qualified coaches under whose guidance our budding tennis players will be entrusted. Messrs. Benny Vidal (director of the coaching Clinics) Venelin Georgev, Louis Cassar, Ms. Esther Muscat, Patricia Caffari, and Mary Muscat. A number of assistant coaches, including Paul Xuereb, Emmanuel Bonello and Noel Portelli, will also be helping during clinics.

Young children (5 to 8 years) are first introduced to the game through Mini-Tennis classes. These consist of Mini-courts, which are one-quarter of a proper tennis court, equipped with small nets and using soft balls. These balls bounce far less than an ordinary tennis-ball thus giving the very young children more chance of hitting an oncoming ball over the low net. At the same time, the young players have more time to concentrate on the swing of their arm.

After two years at this Mini-Tennis stage, children are promoted to higher classes where they will concentrate more on the technical aspect of the game. Aggression and tactical approach are taught later when the children would have mastered the basic techniques of tennis.

The success of these courses are measured by the number of players who emerged from the TCK coaching clinics and made a name for themselves both in local and foreign Open tennis tournaments. Some of these youngsters have, or are at present, occupying the number one spot of their respective age-group.

Application forms may be obtained from Tennis Club Kordin (Tel. 21804703/21690874. Closing date is Sunday 18 September. Late applications will only be accepted if places are available in the age group concerned.

Groups will be announced on 2 October when, the director of coaching will also address the parents of those children attending the Tennis Club Kordin clinic.
