The Sportswriters Association and the MFA will be commemorating the 100th year since the birth of Carmelo Costa, a pioneer in local sport broadcasting.

A symbolic ceremony is to be held today at the Centenary Stadium, Ta' Qali at 7.30pm, that is, after the end of the youths match between Birkirkara and Valletta.

Members of the Costa family will present a photo of Carmelo Costa which will be hung at the Press Room at the same Stadium. That room was named after Carmelo Costa by the MFA when the Stadium was inaugurated.

Costa was born on 28 September 1905 and was involved in broadcasting between 1949 and 1985.

He was well known for his commentaries on local football from the Empire Stadium in Gzira. But his main commentary was the England-Malta match at Wembley on 12 May 1971.

He also attended the Mediterranean Games of 1963 in Naples and those of 1967 in Tunisia.

He died on 11 November 1986.
