Wrestling: Malta Fourth in Grand Prix of Sicily

Malta finished fourth in the Grand Prix of Sicily in Palermo out of seven nations. Germany totalled the same number of points and was awarded third place due to winning more medals.

The tournament was won by Sicily as its team included quite a number of wrestlers who normally represent Italy. Hungary, Romania and Italy ended up behind Malta.

The Malta team was under the direction of national coach Jesmond Giordemaina, aided by Emmanuel Cilia. Except for the experienced Abraham Vassallo, the Maltese team was made up also of seven young wrestlers in their first experience abroad.

Malta managed to win two silver medals, one by Abraham Vassallo (84kg) and the other by young Adam Vella (52kg). On the other hand Matthew Bonnici (48kg), Charlon Borg (76kg), Aidam Buhagiar (85kg) and Karl Paris (100kg) all won bronze.

The Maltese federation is currently concentrating a lot on young wrestlers in the hope of building a strong national team worth of holding its own in international competitions.

On this occasion wrestlers had to fork out their air travel expenses out of their own pockets as the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation is presently facing financial difficulties.
