Thanks to the initiative of the Malta Olympic Committee, the Malta Lawn Bowls Association has recently been set up in Malta. This traditional sport is very popular in England as well as in several Commonwealth countries.

In England one finds Bowls greens which date hundreds of years back. It is a very popular game there.

The oldest Bowls green still played on is in Southampton where records show that the green has been in operation for more than 700 years.

Lawn Bowls is included in the Commonwealth Games, and there is one place in Malta where it is practised, namely in a Mellieha hotel, mainly by British tourists and others from Commonwealth countries. It is a very popular sport in Australia and it is practised by many Maltese-Australians.

The main aim behind the setting up of the Malta Lawn Bowls Association is to promote this sport in Malta.

In the coming months the Federation intends to organise a national league both for men and for women. In future the federation will take part in international competitions and will itself organise such competitions in Malta.

Contacts are being made with Maltese immigrants in such countries as Australia, New Zealand and Canada to come to Malta and promote the game here.

The ad interim committee appointed to run the Malta Lawn Bowls Association has already started its work by obtaining international recognition as a member of the International Federation of World Bowls.
