The H2 Only Senior Men’s Century and Ladies 80 tournament was successfully concluded over the last weekend of September at the Hotel Calypso Sports Complex.
Island Beverages Co Ltd, with their product H2 Only, support this traditional end of season seniors event as its main sponsors while Messrs Vascas and Wilson, also new for this event, willingly joined in as associate sponsors respectively providing subsidised prizes and free tennis balls for the tournament.
This year, the steady pair of former Malta champions Vincent Curmi/Tony Schranz made sure to challenge last year’s winners and regain the Dghajsa Latina Silver trophy which is annually presented to the winners by the Gozo Island Tennis Club. In the final they beat in straight sets Albert Pace Asciaq/Patrick Dato Mallia 6-4, 6-3.
In the Ladies 80, last year’s winners Vera Busutti/Elaine Gatt Baldacchino failed to retain the title won last year after a three set effort losing to former winner and hard hitter Sharon Attard and her partner, former winner Wilma Stivala 6-2; 1-6; 6-2.
The respective Consolation events were won by Alan Sunderland/Anton Camenzuli overcoming the strong challenge put up by Ian Wirth/Gianfranco Selvaggi.
In the Ladies event Pat Camenzuli/Cynthia Petroni only just managed to beat Virginia Calleja/Veronica Ellul in over two hours 6-3, 5-7(6) and a deciding tie break, 8-6.
For the first time this year, the organisers decided to put aside some money collected from the participants and forward it to the ARKA Foundation, Gozo. Hopefully this limited solidarity with the Foundation will be maintained in future.
At the end of the finals, in the absence for the first time of Mr William Portelli, Godwin Borg, Chairman of the Tennis Section of the Marsa Sports Club, and Pat Camenzuli, the force behind this year’s tournament, who were assisted by Carol Urry and Elvira Petroni, presented the prizes to the winners.
