Squash – Marsa Open 2005: Ivan Balzan Takes title in close finish

Over 30 players took part in this years Marsa squash open.

The ‘A’ event included 2 ‘overseas’ players. Graham Unsworth, a member of the Great Britain veterans team and now resident in Gozo and Martin Paga from Vienna mixed up the ‘local’ players finishing 7th and 5th respectively.

The semi- finals were between Karl Grech Orr and Johanna Rizzo and Ivan Balzan and Gordon Asciak. Both semis were close matches with Balzan and Grech Orr progressing to the final.

The final, played in front of a large crowd on the centre court at the Marsa Sports & Country Club was a very close match with Balzan overpowering Grech Orr and taking his first title of the season.

The ‘B’ section included no less than 8 players that were playing a squash tournament for the very first time. The enthusiasm was high and the games all closely fought.

After 4 rounds of extremely competitive squash the final was played between James Gauci Borda and Adrian Camilleri the latter playing in his first open final.

Gauci Borda, who won last months Union Club tournament and Camilleri, fought out an extremely close game with Gauci Borda winning the final game and his second title of the season 9-7.

Malta Squash secretary presented both winners with a trophy, donated by the Marsa squash section, and expressed her thanks to the squash section committee for their hard work.
