Dr Kirill Micallef Stafrace was among the 400 senior sports medicine specialists who recently attended a delegate meeting for the European Federation of Sports Medicine Associations (EFSMA) in Cyprus, where the 4th European Sports Medicine Congress was held.

During the delegate meeting Dr. Kirill Micallef Stafrace was elected for the forthcoming four years on the executive of the EFSMA.

This executive consists of 8 full members and two reserve members from various European countries. Dr. Micallef Stafrace contested for the single post against more established countries including France, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Portugal and Israel. The high esteem the Malta Olympic Committee is held throughout the European states served a vital role in aiding Dr. Kirill Micallef Stafrace’s appointment.

The role of EFSMA is to have Sports Medicine recognised as a speciality within the European Union and in all of Europe; to develop and harmonise education in Sports Medicine throughout Europe and to get Sports Medicine included in the basic curricula at all Medical schools and Educational Institutions; to be a pan-European forum in Sports Medicine for the improvement of communication between sports Medicine Organizations in Europe; to coordinate European Sports Medicine actions and to cooperate with Sport Science disciplines in Europe; to increase understanding of the importance of physical activity and sport training for the whole European population and dissemination knowledge of the principles and methods of Sports Medicine for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and diseases; to encourage the exchange of scientific results and experiences and to encourage and engage in common research; to establish common strength and propagate a Sports Medicine Code of Ethics throughout Europe.

Currently Dr. Micallef Stafrace lectures at the University of Malta and is Director of Marketing and Chair of the Medical Commission of the Malta Olympic Committee.
