Kerygma Blues and X-Sel are the only unbeaten teams in the new Ghaqda Kittieba Sports Cup, being held for the first time as a pre-season warm up competition for the local volleyball senior teams. They managed to defend their 100 per cent winning streak against Fleur de Lys FEB and Paola Hibs Candy in this weekend’s matches, however the latter have another chance of succeding to the final if they are successful in the losers’ bracket.
In the Ladies’ section, Paola Hibs Candy will now play against the winner of the match between Flyers and Fleur de Lys CFK, who were both successful during this weekend, thus eliminating Aloysians Playvolley and Kerygma respectively.
After dividing the first two sets, Flyers improved considerably from the third set onwards, leaving just 30 points for the opponents in the last two sets, before wrapping up the match with a 3-1 score.
The match between Kerygma and Fleur de Lys CFK was much more straightforward, with Fleur de Lys managing to outclass their opponents to win comfortably 3-0.
The match between Paola Hibs Candy and X-Sel, the two unbeaten teams till this stage of the competition, was another thriller. Hibs Candy took the first set, before X-Sel turned the result in their favour by winning the next two sets.
In the fourth set, Paola managed to save themselves from a 3-1 defeat by winning 29-27, however they did not manage to keep the same rhythm in the decisive one. X-Sel went 8-2 up, and although Paola did go close to equalise, the former did manage to win 15-13, and close the match 3-2 in their favour.
In the Men’s sector, San Anton and Aloysians Lipton will feature in an interesting match this weekend to see who will battle it out against Fleur de Lys FEB for a place in the final against Kerygma Blues.
San Anton did not find any difficulty at all to overcome the resistance put up by Aloysians Reds, needing just 68 minutes to complete a 3-0 win. Aloysians Lipton, on the other hand, found the going tough against Kerygma Yellows, with the latter having setter Mark Soler in inspiring form, before finishing off the match 3-1, and progressing to the next stage of the competition.
The match between the two unbeaten teams finished in Kerygma Blues’ favour, after a gruelling match between most probably the two most in form teams at the moment. This was the Blues’ second win against FEB this season, after the 2-0 win in the Palmali Cup, and with a number of other competitions at stake, it seems that the encounters between these two teams should be the ones to watch throughout the season.
