Running loosely along the acoustic by-lines of like-minded artists such as Katie Melua and Gemma Hayes, KT Tunstall’s debut outing is blessed with flowing melodies. The melodies seep in from the very first gentle strums of opening tracks and hit single Other Side of the World, and spread out through the next 47 minutes of her uncomplicated but effectively arranged tunes. To make this all the more impressive, KT also has a voice to die for, whether she is going for the breezy sway of new single Suddenly I See, the gritty slant on the remarkable Black Horse and the Cherry Tree or the unique vocal twist she applies on Other Side of The World.
Aside from the upbeat slant of Suddenly I See and Black Horse, the core of the record runs along a slower thread, with KT applying herself to try her hardest to bring out each and every song’s feel. This she does with varying results. When it does work - on Another Place To Fall, Silent Sea or Through The Dark, for example - the songs soar, and the vitality of her song-writing shines through. But there are lesser moments too, such as Stoppin’ The Love or Universe & U, which lack the soul of this record’s stronger numbers. That said, however, Eye To The Telescope is as fine a debut as any other novice in today’s scenario, but with a great deal of promise of better things to come from the young and talented KT Tunstall!
