Appreciation: Gulinu Aquilina

Malta Independent Wednesday, 2 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

I feel privileged to have been associated with two of the finest sports clubs in Malta – Valletta Football Club and the Valletta United Water Polo Club.

At both clubs I worked with good administrators and who were the heart that steered both City teams to greatness.

The wheel of good fortune, at both clubs, has turned its full circle for Gulinu Aquilina.

Gulinu was a committee-member, Secretary, Council member and temporarily President at Valletta FC (between 1960-1984).

Again Gulinu was a member, Secretary and Council member at the Valletta United Water Polo Club, the pioneers of Maltese waterpolo. Furthermore, Gulinu refereed football and waterpolo matches at most levels. As a waterpolo referee (1946-1960) he was supreme, despite the fact that the games were played in the open pitches when the players were tough and the spectators very keen. But Gulinu feared no one.

At Valletta FC he was a tough negotiator at all levels and was considered as one of the best MFA Council members.

But Gulinu had a sense of humour!

I had the pleasure sharing with him all that was good, or bad, in the City team.

Gulinu Aquilina will remain inseparable from all that was justified for our favourite teams – Valletta FC and Valletta Waterpolo Club.

Farewell Gulinu.
