Local Football: New Malta Coach may be named in three weeks

Malta Independent Thursday, 3 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Horst Heese’s successor as Maltese national coach is expected to be named soon, possibly within the next three weeks, according to MFA president Dr Joe Mifsud.

Heese’s contract with the MFA had expired after the match against Bulgaria last month and the German was not interested in getting an extension from the local association.

Dr Mifsud yesterday confirmed to The Malta Independent that the association was still working to find a suitable replacement for Heese, but did not mention any names, even though national Under 21 coach Mark Miller seems to be the hot favourite.

Asked when an announcement is to be made, Dr Mifsud said: “We are still working on it. But we should be able to announce the name of the new coach in three weeks.”

Dr Mifsud added that Miller was at present acting as national coach and training for the seniors’ squad was still going on regularly at Ta’ Qali.
