Diesel And kerosene: GRTU calls for withdrawal of increase

Malta Independent Saturday, 5 November 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises (GRTU) has called on the Malta Resources Authority and the Office of Fair Competition to order Enemalta Corporation to suspend the increase in the price of diesel and kerosene announced on 1 November.

The GRTU has also asked the Office of the Prime Minister to call a round table meeting of all authorities involved in the fuel issue affecting transporters and small enterprises using diesel fuel, kerosene, light heating oil and gas oil to agree on an early solution to the claims made by GRTU on behalf of all enterprises affected by the fuel price increase.

They released copies of letters addressed to Malta Resources Authority and Office of Fair Competition.

In their letter to the MRA, the GRTU called for it to order Enemalta to withdraw the 8-mil increase per litre in the price of diesel and the 1c4 increase per litre of kerosene as imposed on 1 November.

The GRTU’s complaint refers also to the formula and methods adopted by Enemalta Corporation to increase the prices of energy products. GRTU is gravely concerned that rather than the import price parities, Enemalta appears to use some other pricing method which is to the disadvantage of consumers and users. The GRTU also requested an urgent meeting with the MRA.

In its letter to the Office of Fair Competition, the GRTU called on the office to

“investigate the abuse of monopoly position (by Enemalta) and to issue orders to Enemalta to suspend the price increase.”
