Tarxien Rainbows consolidated their third place in the table when they beat promotion aspirants Senglea Athletic with a solitary goal scored just before the interval.
The match was very balanced but Tarxien held territorial superiority in the first half and they crowned their superiority with the decisive goal. In the second half Senglea tried desperately to get to level terms but their approach was rather chaotic and the Rainbows’ defence held their opponents at bay.
For Senglea this third defeat of the season was another setback in their quest to gain promotion in their anniversary celebrations.
Senglea had a good opportunity on seven minutes when Mark Marlow passed to Kenneth Abela whose shot from an acute angle was well saved by Curmi.
Tarxien had a good opportunity on 14 minutes, with Carlos Camenzuli denied by a good Attard save. Tarxien had a good chance through an indirect free-kick inside the area by Alan Tabone, but the Senglea defence cleared the danger.
Just before the break Tarxien scored what proved to be the winning goal. Alan Tabone beat a couple of defenders before passing to Kurt Coleiro who beat the helpless Attard with a precise grounder.
In the second half although Senglea held the upper hand, their scoring chances were scarce with a good chance by Marlow which the Tarxien goalkeeper saved.
