Malta’s Alex Borg reached the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open which was concluded the past weekend. The other Maltese professional, Tony Drago, was eliminated in the last 32 round.

It was no doubt Borg’s best performance so far since he returned to the professional fold after he won the European title in June.

In the quarter-finals, Borg was gunned down by Ireland’s Ken Doherty who won the best of seven frame match 4-2.

Ricky Walden won the event after beating Ken Doherty in the final 5-3.

In the last 16 round, Borg had crushed David Gray 4-0. In the earlier rounds, the Mellieha-born cueist had beaten Mark King 3-2 (last 32) and Marcin Nitschke 3-0 (last 52).

Borg had won Group 19 on his way to qualifying for the last 52 stage of the competition. He had obtained three straight 2-0 wins against Franz Stahli, Pascal Camenzind and Angelique Vialard to finish top of the Group.

Tony Drago had also won Group 13 to qualify for the last 52 stage. He also obtained three straight 2-0 wins, beating Marcel Muller, Patrick Muller and Stephane Ochoiski.

In the last 52 round, he beat Matthias Prisi 3-0, but then lost 3-2 to Tom Ford in the last 32 round.

Although failing to make it to the list of century compilers during the tournament, both Borg and Drago compiled several good breaks with Borg registering 96, 83, 83, 63, 63, 50 and 50. Drago has breaks of 96, 71, 62, 65, 55, 51 and 51.
