Malta Independent Saturday, 10 December 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

As everyone knows, the “Razzett tal-Hbiberija” is a non-profit organisation that regularly offers an array of health and leisure services free of charge to over one thousand disabled persons. It depends entirely on the generosity of the public and of its sponsors for its continued operation.

The Badminton Association recently organised its an annual fund-raising event in aid of the “Razzett”. Usually taking the form of a half-day tournament, this year the event was upgraded to a twelve-hour marathon.

The marathon took place at St. Martin’s College, Swatar. Singles and Doubles matches were in continuous progress over the twelve-hour period. The first match started at 9am; the last one ended at 9pm.

The event was open to everyone: beginners, intermediate and experienced players, locals and foreigners alike; there was no age limitation. Badminton Association members were also encouraged to approach their family members and friends for a donation.

Both Mr. Nathan Farrugia, Chief Executive Officer of the Razzett, as well as Mrs. Janatha Stubbs visited St. Martin’s College at different times during the day while the marathon was in progress.

All the proceeds from this event were to be donated by the Association to the “Razzett”. In order to manifest its support, St. Martin’ College generously offered the use of its sports hall free of charge.

The overall proceeds from the event amounted to Lm215. A cheque for this amount was recently presented by the Association to Mrs. Stubbs, on behalf of the “Razzett”.

Mrs. Stubbs thanked the Badminton Association and its members for staging the event and for raising the money to help offset part of the operational costs entailed in running the “Razzett”.

On its part, the Association expressed its considerable satisfaction at the high level of participation manifested by its several members as well as at their generosity. The Association also confirmed its continued intention to keep raising funds for the Razzett by means of an annual event.
