The final tournament of 2005 took place last Saturday at the LivingWell health studio, Hilton.

The tournament, once again divided in two groups, proved a tremendous success.

Play commenced in the ‘B’ event with all competitors playing at least three matches.

Once again, several competitors were taking part in a squash tournament for the first time showing the continual growth of the game in Malta.

The two semi-finals, between George Goodall and Adriano Mintoff, and Alex Scerri against Neil Kerr both proved to be extremely close and entertaining matches.

In the end, the experience of Goodal and Scerri proved too much for their opponents and both players progressed comfortably to the final.

The final was closely fought, with Alex Scerri winning 9-7 and so claiming his first tournament success. Scerri was presented with an attractive prize of a ‘dinner for two’ in the Oceana restaurant and a well deserved massage at the in-house Myoka.

The ‘A’ event followed, this time played in groups, and all the matches were extremely close with one or two first round surprises.

Three players progressed to the final round of group matches. Peter Wirth, Graham Unsworth and Nigel Dunkerley.

Dunkerley lost both his matches and so finished third, leaving the final match of the day between Wirth and Unsworth to decide this year’s winner.

The match was evenly balanced. Wirth took the lead before Unsworth pulled level. The match continued to go one way then the other. In the final game, both players had several ‘match balls’ before Wirth eventually secured his first tournament win 10-9.

Wirth was also presented with an attractive prize, a three-month membership at the LivingWell health studios and also a well deserved massage at the in-house Myoka.

Malta Squash secretary Liz Said thanked the LivingWell health club, Oceana restaurant and Myoka for their generous support of the event.
