Women’s Peugeot League: Depiro still in command at the top

Malta Independent Thursday, 15 December 2005, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The champions had a slow start to this game and Loyola stayed close for some time, but a 9-0 run late in the session gave Depiro the confidence they needed, and from then on it was cakewalk for them.

Loyola still provided the grit but they were up against superior opposition. Till the interval Depiro had extended their advantage and the score went up to 37-17.

After the break, Depiro seemed to overturn their opponents and Sarah Pace produced personal points but Loyola recovered till the end of the quarter, to share the game but Depiro’s lead had already escalated, with a 58-27 score.

In the final session the champions relaxed a little and their bench players went on court. They still managed to impose their control on the game and it was Joselle Cardona who started making the hoops.

Depiro stayed on their unbeaten track as Loyola, understandably started to lose touch with the leaders.

Loyola:13 Franesca Biano

Depiro: 24 Dorrianne Galea, 12 Joselle Cardona

Referees: Alfred Carbonaro, Jennifer Mangani

Naxxar Danone 58

SN Suns JC 21

(18-4) (17-5) (16-4) (7-8)

Naxxar made the double over bottom club Suns to register their third league victory.

Both sides had a slow start with Suns keeping close for some time but Naxxar had the better ending to the session, with a 13-0 run to start off their control match.

They continued in the second quarter, with another opening 13-0 run before Suns could improve on their score, which was low, and at the interval it was a 35-9 game.

After the break, without setting any houses on fire, Naxxar kept on steadily increasing their lead, with Suns’ only reply coming from Amanda Farrugia.

After three sessions the score stood at 51-13.

In the final quarter Naxxar fell completely away, with a couple of their bench players court. Suns took the opportunity to last the game better, although way behind on paints, and still seeking their first seasonal win.

Naxxar: Claire Hawkins 17, Annabel Busuttil 9

Suns: Lilian Cremona 7

Referees: Emanual Magani, Clive Terribile

Hibs Medsea 77

Kerygma 43

(15-10) 18-4) (24-14) (20-15)

Hibs jumped into the second spot in the table, although with a game more, beating Kerygma easily, to leap frog over Luxol.

The Paolites started the game with Maria Desira on court, and she responded well. Hibs then went to town in the second quarter, dominating Kerygma and easing away from their opponents, and at the interval they were enjoying a 33-14 score in favour.

After the break both teams produced their best patch as Lucienne Bezzina let loose for the Paolites, including her treys and the same was reciprocated by Josette Calleja for Kerygma, but Hibs continued to extend their lead and make doubly sure before the final session started.

The last quarter didn’t differ much as Kerygma still produced the goods with their hoops, but Hibs were still better, especially though Alexis Darmanin and Doreen Parnis. All in all both sides should be content with the result.

Hibs: 28 Lucienne Bezzina, 20 Alexis Darmanin, 13 Maria Desira

Kerygma: 25 Josette Calleja

Referees: B. Vassallo, Emanuel Mangani
