Premier Division club Msida St Joseph yesterday entered into a three-year sponsorship agreement with Eurosport.

Announcing the agreement, Christina Sammut Peresso said the company had decided to help Msida because it was a small club with a big heart. “It will cost the company around Lm8,000 over three years,” she said.

The sponsorship consists of all the kit the club will require, even for training purposes. It consists of jackets, shoes, track suits, training kits, the preferred red kit and the second green outfit. The clothing includes summer and winter apparel.

Ms Sammut Peresso said Michele Peresso Ltd, operators of Eurosport, had sponsored clubs, associations and individuals in the past. “This is not our first sponsorship, but we just hope it will be the first in a series which will lead into the future with success,” she added.

Edward Calleja, vice-president of the club, thanks Eurosport for the sponsorship adding that they were announcing it a few hours before their scheduled clash with Floriana tomorrow, because in the past, there had been a match between the two clubs for a decision as to who would wear the green jersey. “On that day it was Floriana who won, but tomorrow, we hope to repeat what we did in the first round. Then we won 4-2,” he said.

Calleja said fans will also be able to buy the kits as some will be made available for marketing purposes.

As to the transfer market, Calleja confirmed that there had been some approaches for some of their players during the past few weeks, during which goalkeeper Omar Borg, Roderick Bajada and Nigerian striker Ibrahim Babatunde have been frequently mentioned in the press. “There will be some movements in the next few weeks, both in and out of the club. But we want to assure our fans that we will be strengthening and not weakening the team. Our target is still a Championship Pool place and we feel we are just a few steps away from achieving that target. It would be the first time that the team would play in the Championship Pool. After that, we might consider something else, perhaps a place in Europe next season,” he added.

Calleja confirmed that the club will be getting a new foreigner, probably the choice will fall on one of these two players: Burkina Faso’s Zuen Go who is an Anderlecht product or a Brazilian 23-year-old midfielder. They are both on our shortlist and we have already seen them in action,” he said.

He also confirmed that the club has parted company with David Carabott after just four months. “We released the player after having reached an amicable agreement, even though we only got to know of his new club Sliema from press reports,” he said.

The vice-president added that the club was happy with the performances of the side so far this season. “Though we have suffered two consecutive defeats, there is no cause for alarm. In the first round, we had the same story and we recovered. I’m sure we will recover again this time to make sure of our Championship Pool place as quickly as possible,” he remarked.
