Juventus clinched Serie A's symbolic winter title with two rounds to spare yesterday, beating Siena 2-0.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro headed in a corner in the 13th minute and David Trezeguet scored for the ninth straight game in the 54th.

With 46 points, Juventus hold an eight-point lead over second-place Inter with only two rounds to go before the season's midpoint. The club that earns the winter title has won the league crown 70 per cent of the time.

Inter beat Empoli 4-1 for their sixth consecutive victory but may have lost Brazil striker Adriano to injury.

Adriano appeared to be knocked unconscious briefly after colliding heads with Empoli defender Andrea Raggi in the 14th.

Inter's medical team said Adriano was lucid and awake once he left the field but later decided he should be taken to Milan's Niguarda hospital for further examination, the ANSA news agency reported.

Ten minutes before the collision, Adriano scored to give Inter a 1-0 lead. Julio Ricardo Cruz, Adriano's replacement, made it 2-0 five minutes into first-half injury time. Portugal's Luis Figo and Nigeria forward Obafemi Martins also scored for Inter.

Milan remained in third place with a 3-0 win at fifth-place Livorno, where Alberto Gilardino scored twice and Andriy Shevchenko also tallied.

Fourth-place Fiorentina held on for a 1-0 victory over Palermo, thanks to Martin Jorgensen's 40th-minute tally, but league scoring leader Luca Toni remained goalless for the fourth straight game, this time against the club he left at the end of last season.
