A keenly contested game where both teams had their good moments but Valletta were more dangerous and direct in their approaches.
Spartans’ keeper Ryan Mangion foiled Joseph Galea with a timely sortie after a Charlton Scicluna through ball, at other end, Mario Busuttil put Gilmore Micallef through but he drove over City’s bar.
From a flagkick by Nikky Vassallo, Elliot Lauri headed wide off Spartans upright and Neol Curmi put Scicluna through who fouled to make contact with the ball when well placed in Spartans area.
Ricky Camilleri was fouled outside City’s area and from the freekick taken by Micallef City’ keeper Kain Galea saved his shot in two attempts, Chris Cacciatolo put Micallef through but he drove out with only Galea to beat.
The Dylan Grima served Joseph Galea from a freekick and Hamrun 'keeper had to dive and save his shot.
Valletta took the lead on the half hour; from a Joseph Galea freekick the ball was partially cleared and Dylan Grima first-timed the rebound in the corner of the net.
Galea then saved in two attempts on Micallef after a Steve Portelli through ball.
Hamrun created the first occasions after the resart. From a Lee Agius flagkick, a header by Dalton Caruana was cleared on the time and Galea saved on the same player after being served by Micallef.
In a Valletta reaction, Curmi headed first wide from a Vassallo freekick and substitute Neil Blundell did likewise after another Vassallo freekick.
On 57 minutes Hamrun were reduced to 10 men as Gilmore Micallef was shown the red card after a second booking.
A cross shot by Vassallo nearly deceived Galea which finished out by a whisker. Mangion then saved on Joseph Galea in two attempts after a Scicluna through ball and Mangion saved a grounder by substitute Valter Caruana.
Eight minutes from time the same player should have doubled for Valletta but he drove out with only Mangion to beat after a Grima perfect through ball.

Although playing below their normal form, the Amateurs kept their unbeaten run from the last six outing.
Tarxien should have scored after two minutes. Andy Mangion crossed to Matthew Schembri after beating two opponents, the latter’s shot hit the upright with Melita keeper Karl Zahra beaten and Schembri hit the rebound over the bar with an open goal at his mercy, Zahra saved a header then by James Shead after a Schembri cross and a grounder by the same player after the Joseph Cutajar through pas.
Melita’s reaction was a cross by Kurt Micallef to Julian Galea who drove over the bar, Galea shot which missed the upright and a cross by Kurt Micallef to Steven Bonnici with Camilleri saving the latter’s shot, and at the other end Shead put Edmund Vassallo though and Zahra neutralized the latter’s cross.
The first action after restart came from Tarxien when a Scerri cross was neutralised by Zahra.
From the flag kick by substitute Luke Fenech, a shot by Kane Micallef hit the bar end a Tarxien defender cleared the ball on the fatal line.
Melita forged ahead on 52 minutes through Galea who made no mistake from inside the area after a Kane Micallef perfect cross. Camilleri then foiled Galea with a timely sortie after a through pass by substitute Jeremy Pace.
Camilleri then turned to corner a Galea shot after being put through by Kane Micallef and on 67 minutes the upright denied Melita a second goal from a Kane Micallef shot after a Galea through ball.
