Obscene language at local football venues could lead to clubs losing points in future, warned Dr Joe Mifsud, MFA president.
Dr Mifsud was speaking during the Smash TV programme, MFA Magazine, earlier this week, when he made his statement.
He said that he felt it was about time that the association’s council discussed the issue seriously.
The comments came about in the light of the obscene language used again and again near the end of last Monday’s Quadrangular tournament match at the Centenary Stadium between Valletta and Birkirkara.
Dr Mifsud said such language was unacceptable at all times especially during this time of the year, when everyone should augur well to each other.
It was here that he suggested that the MFA should also consider loss of points for clubs whose supporters indulge in such offending language. “Such action should preclude such offences as was the case when the MFA introduced harsh penalties against clubs whose fans indulged in racist abuse. If not, each club will have the opportunity to sue their own fans,” said Dr Mifsud.
