Tennis: Matthew Asciak Crowned new Malta champion

Young Matthew Asciak became Malta’s youngest singles champion ever yesterday when he beat Daniel Ceross in the final of the Gatorade Malta Open Championship at the Marsa Sports Club.

Asciak, who is only 15 years old, defeated Ceross in straight sets 6-4 6-1.

The youngster, son of the famous Gordon and Helen Asciak, former Malta champions, played a steady baseline game and sustained Ceross’s superior serves, controlling the game from the beginning, gradually dominating to emerge winner.

It is worth mentioning that Matthew broke his father’s record as the youngest champion which stood for 27 years.

In the doubles final, Alexander Manojlovic and Daniel Ceross beat Matthew Asciak and Matthew Debono 6-3 6-3.
