The second of four table tennis Grand Prix events for season 2005/6 was won by veteran Joe Borg Cardona when he beat top junior Guo Ming in an exciting and close final. The scores were 13-11, 7-11, 17-15 and finally 11-9.
Although the eventual winner of this event was Joe Borg Cardona he did not have things all his own way. He lost to the much improved junior player Matthew Micallef on the way to the final. Matthew also had notable wins against other senior players Lassad Boutara and Leslie Bajada and close games with others.
The Grand Prix tournament brings together the top 24 players in Malta four times a year, the overall winners of the Gold or Silver sections being the players winning the most Gold or Silver points in the four events. Gold points are awarded in the top-12 section and Silver points in the 13-24 section.
To qualify to play in this tournament a player must be ranked as one of the top 24 players in Malta, as per the ranking system run by the Malta Table Tennis Association, which is based on results of play in the Malta National Table Tennis League and various ranking events throughout the year.
