Malta’s Alex Borg was yesterday eliminated from the World Championship qualifiers when he was beaten by England’s Mark Selby 10-4.

Alex Borg had a very promising start winning the first frame. Selby immediately won the second frame to level the score, but the Maltese player was in superb form in the third frame winning it 109-0.

The fourthe frame was keenly contested with Alex Borg winning it 67-59 to take a commanding 3-1.

However the player from Leiecester, ranked No 32, started to show his worth by winning four frames in a row to go 5-3 in front. Unfortunately this was the begining of the end for Alex Borg’s dreams.

Before the break, Alex Borg managed to win the ninth frame, but in the second session Mark Selby showed no mercy as he won five frames in a row to go to the fourth round of the competition.

In the first rounds Alex Borg had beaten Simon Bedford 10-6 and Jimmy Michie 10-8 after a stunning comeback.

Malta’s only hope is now on Tony Drago who faces David Gilbert today.
