Lord Carrington’s Exclusive TVM interview

Malta Independent Wednesday, 1 February 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The 1971/72 Anglo-Maltese dispute over the British base in Malta will be one of the themes to be discussed in the new 20-part television documentary series L-Istorja minn wara l-kwinti, which goes on air on Television Malta on Monday, 13 February.

A team which included Dr Mark Fenech, Prof. Henry Frendo and Chris Pace of Blaze Productions Limited recently flew to London to record an interview with Lord Peter Carrington who, as British Foreign Secretary, had led difficult and painstaking negotiations with former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff during that period.

Lord Carrington, who answered questions put forward by Prof. Frendo, reminisced on his experiences of the Anglo-Maltese crisis and on his impressions of Mr Mintoff and of his negotiating skills. The interview, which took place at Lord Carrington’s private residence in London, was made possible following contacts made by the Malta High Commissioner in London Dr Michael Refalo.

Dr Fenech and Prof. Frendo also visited Marlborough House, the venue of the Malta Independence Conference. Various recordings for the television series were carried out in this prestigious location. The national carrier Air Malta sponsored the team’s one-day visit to London.
