A man has been charged with importing protected birds, finches and birds of prey, in May 2005.
Pawlu Azzopardi, 36, who lives on his yacht Hawkwind, pleaded not guilty to illegally importing protected live birds on 18 May last year.
He is accused of storing the birds, including a lanner falcon, in cages of an inadequate size and of cruelty to animals. The birds allegedly found in his possession were worth Lm150. He is additionally charged with failing to pay Lm27 in VAT.
Inspector Alexander Miruzzi prosecuted.
Dr Franco Debono appeared for the accused.
Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona presided over the court.
