A Neapolitan man was given suspended jail sentence and a fine after he pleaded guilty to acting as a door-to-door salesman without a licence, of circulating counterfeit goods and of defrauding three people of a total of Lm980.
Giovanni Nappi, 42, admitted yesterday he had circulated counterfeit merchandise and defrauded Joseph and Karenna Grech and Ivan Sammut on, and before, 3 February 2006. He also pleaded guilty to not having a licence to act as a door-to-door salesman.
The court took the man’s early guilty plea, his cooperation with police and the fact that the victims were reimbursed into consideration when handing down judgement.
The man was given a one-year jail term suspended for two years and a Lm150 fine.
Presiding Magistrate Miriam Hayman ordered the eight counterfeit jackets and one bag to be destroyed.
Inspectors Angelo Gafa and Maurice Curmi prosecuted.
Dr Anthony Cutajar appeared for the accused.
