Broken Promises will lead to PN’s downfall – MLP leader

The PN government’s long list of unfulfilled promises will be its downfall, the Labour Party leader said on Wednesday.

Speaking during party activity in San Gwann, Dr Alfred Sant said the PN was making promises it was unable to keep, adding that the secret report leaked to the media confirmed that the broken promises by the PN led to the party’s dismal showing in the European Parliament election.

He said the people in Malta and Gozo were starting to see through the smokescreen put up by the government.

Dr Sant said the PN was distributing leaflets claiming that all was well and good. “However, between December and January, there was an increase of 400 people on the unemployment register,” he said.

“The people should be wary of the PN and I would not be surprised if the Nationalist government announces some massive project on the eve of the local council elections that will generate wealth and employment,” he said, referring to the Gama deal that fell through.

He said the government should stop making promises it could not keep.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had said that he would present the audits from the Commonwealth Heads of State Meeting by the end of January or mid-February, Dr Sant said.

“So far we have seen nothing, and I challenge the Prime Minister to present the audited accounts in parliament,” said Dr Sant.

He said the MLP would remain close to the people and anything that affected the community was important. Even in those councils that had a minority representation, the Labour Party’s councillors had done their best for the community.

The MLP will not make promises it could not keep, he said, adding that for 17 years the PN had claimed it had a solution to prevent flooding in Msida.

With regard to accusations made by the PN that tar had seeped into a heritage site in Rabat, Dr Sant said: “It turned out to be soil. But this is the same PN that always tries to put the blame on the MLP and councils where Labour has a majority.”

Dr Sant encouraged people to vote for the party’s candidates on 11 March.
