Badminton: Good Start for Kenneth Vella in Division One

Malta Independent Wednesday, 1 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

This season’s edition of this competition is gradually gaining momentum as its several divisions come on stream. Consisting of five Singles and three Doubles divisions, the competition is being regularly played on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the Cottonera Sports Complex as well as on Sunday mornings at St. Martin’s College, Swatar.

Kenneth Vella (Pawla Wolves BC) started his First Division commitments on the right foot with a 15/3 15/13 win over team mate Tony Xuereb. As evidenced by the set scores, a clearly determined Vella did not leave much room for his opponent in the initial set.

Xuereb recovered in the second set, during which he shared the exchanges with Vella. However, the latter made the set and the match his own in the final stages, to bag his first two points of the season.

Xuereb made up for this initially negative start by beating Patrick Cassar 15/5 15/12. After surging ahead in the first set, he then controlled Cassar’s strong reaction in the second to bring home the respective two points.

Mark Briffa (Shuttles BC) leads the Second Division standings with maximum points. He started his commitments with a 15/6 15/10 win over James Bugeja. He then proceeded to defeat Joanne Vella in two clear sets: 15/9 15/13.

The Fourth Division is revealing itself to be a tight contest. Swede Paul Johansson (Msida Arrows BC) leads the table with four points following his opening two wins over Martin Pace and Adrian Urpani. The latter currently shares the second spot with Christine Dalli, one point adrift of the leader. Pace follows on the two-point mark.

The H2Only League will continue next Wednesday and Thursday with the start of the First Division Doubles fixtures; it will then resume on Sunday with additional Singles fixtures from the fourth and fifth divisions of this competition.
