Malta Independent Friday, 3 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

A man was sentenced to a 15-month jail term suspended for two years, after he pleaded guilty to circulating counterfeit bank notes.

Melvin Zammit was charged with circulating 19 forged Lm5 notes on and before 15 January 2006 in Zebbug. Prosecuting inspector Ian Abdilla explained that the notes in question were not found in the man’s possession.

“His brother and his sister-in-law were found in possession of the bank notes which they said they had procured from Mr Zammit,” the inspector said. He added that the two had pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced to a six-month jail term suspended for a year.

Magistrate Giovanni Grixti handed the man a suspended sentence after he too admitted the charges brought against him.

Dr Martin Fenech appeared for the accused.
