Malta Independent Saturday, 4 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Labour Leader Alfred Sant yesterday said that the Labour-led Gudja local council had fulfilled 80 per cent of the promises it had made prior to the last round of elections at the locality three years ago.

Dr Sant was speaking during a visit to Gudja in the run-up to the upcoming local elections there. He said that the council, led by a majority of councillors elected on behalf of the Malta Labour Party had kept several of the promises it made to residents prior to the last council election.

The Labour leader said that the Gudja council invested Lm120,000 to do up roads which fell under the government’s jurisdiction. Moreover, the council also invested Lm23,000 for works on a public garden in the locality.

Dr Sant said that the Labour-led council also carried out patching and upgraded several pavements. It also paved various alleys in Gudja. On the environment front, the council closely followed development applications in Gudja which would have adversely affected Gudja residents such as that in Wied Garnaw and Wied Has-Saptan.

He said that although the council remained without the promised funds for the e-government project, the council still invested in computers and other technological equipment which can be used by residents. The council also upgraded the public library and is expected to invest Lm1,000 to purchase books.

In the next three years, Dr Sant said, the council plans to carry out an embellishment project in the Tal-Mithna housing estate which includes resurfacing of roads, new pavements and adequate parking facilities. A new Gudja council would insist with the government to tarmac roads which fall under its jurisdiction.
