Malta Independent Sunday, 5 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Music for flute and organ by Vivaldi, Veracini, Corelli and Langlais will feature in the next concert organised by St James Cavalier in aid of the St Catherine of Italy Church restoration fund.

The performance by Robert Calleja (flute) and Romina Morrow (organ) will be held at St Catherine’s Church in Valletta on Sunday 12 March at 11am.

Robert is a regular performer in chamber music. He is a member of the National Youth Orchestra and forms part of the Trio D’Argento together with flutists Rebecca Hall and Fiorella Camilleri, the resident chamber ensemble of the Malta Flute Society. He is also the choir director of The New Choral Singers. Mr Calleja was recently invited to Portsmouth to play during the annual concert of St Edmund’s College. He also attended choir conducting master classes in Hereford.

Romina first started piano lessons at the age of six. She obtained the Advanced Certificate of the Royal Schools of Music, the Teacher’s Diploma A.L.C.M. and continued advanced technique and interpretation under the tutorship of Ms Lucia Micallef.

Romina also studied the pipe organ under the guidance of Mro Alberto Borg OSA. She has given organ recitals and accompanied various artists and choirs at local churches such as St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta and St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Mdina.

This concert is one in a series of concerts organised by St James Cavalier in collaboration with the Malta Flute Society. The Society was founded to meet the growing demand for training and performance opportunities for students. In June the Malta Flute Society is organising the Festival of the Golden Flute, which will include master classes and concerts by international flutists.

Entrance fee for each concert is Lm2. All proceeds will go towards the restoration fund of the Church of St Catherine of Italy.
