Breaking Free of stereotype roles

Malta Independent Wednesday, 8 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Women still have to break free of stereotype role modeling in society – they are more than carers, housewives and mothers, the president of the National Council of Women Helga Ellul said.

In a statement to mark World Women’s Day tomorrow, Mrs Ellul said “we need to embrace a partnership approach for the new families where both women and men can share every aspect of life for the fulfillment of both.”

It is not enough to have gender equality entrenched in the laws of the country, she added, and there had to be a shift from the regulations to implementing it in people’s lives.

“The NCW is researching all obstacles and barriers still existing in our society for women to choose their lifestyle.”

The National Council of Women (NCW) lobbied for women’s equal status for over 40 years.

Although giant steps have been made in developed countries, there are still many countries wherein women do not yet have this right.

“Through its international links, the NCW is constantly supporting and lobbying to see that all women worldwide will achieve equality.

“The NCW is tackling the necessary mind shift and culture changes through educational training in areas such as IT, assertiveness and empowerment.”
