Organisers Of Malta Football Awards claim unfair competition

Malta Independent Thursday, 9 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The organisers of the Malta Football Awards have demanded that the producers of Replay do not go ahead with their plans to organise the Westin Replay Football Awards.

They are claiming that this gives rise to unfair competition.

Sandro Micallef and Alan Cutajar, owners of Events Services, filed a judicial protest against John Busuttil and Robert Cutajar, producers of the television programme Replay. The show is broadcast on Net TV and therefore the protest was also filed against Media.link Communications Company Ltd.

Mr Micallef and Mr Cutajar said Events Services had an exclusive agreement with the Malta Football Association to organise the Malta Football Awards. This event has been held at the Westin Dragonara Hotel for the last four years.

The protest claimed that during the 26 February 2006 episode of Replay an announcement for the Westin Replay Football Awards was made. Mr Micallef and Mr Cutajar asserted that this is in breach of trade laws and leads to unfair competition.

They demanded the producers of Replay withdraw their plans to organise the awards ceremony and they will be holding them liable if not.

The protest was filed in the first hall of the Civil Court by Dr David Farrugia Sacco.
